Do I have to file as single or can I file as head of household? Are there any deductions that I should be doing (like charitable contribution up to $500)?

If you have no dependants you can not claim head of household, You would claim single on your tax return

You will file as single unless you have an eligible dependent, like can claim a parent as a dependent. You can't file head of household without an eligible dependent - and there are some people who could be dependents but don't make the filer eligible for HofH. But no dependent, no HofH status.

The charitable contribution will only help you if your total itemized deductions are over $5150. You get that much automatically as a standard deduction if you don't itemize.

You can not file as Head of Household. You are single now. The head of household is for someone providing a house for dependent children. One of the special deductions this year is the Federal Excise Tax Phone refund. This was a tax that was charged on all long distance services up until last year. The orginal tax was based on how long you talked and how far you called. We no longer pay our long distance charges this way yet they continued to tax us. The IRS is giving a one time refund this year for any person who owned a cell or home phone that had long distance service where they paid at least 1 phone bill. That long distance could be area calling, bulk minutes packages, or basic long distance.
If you itemize your deductions dont forget your donations that were non-cash. Like taking stuff to Goodwill or other charities. Your vehicle taxes where you registered your car. Your property taxes and mortgage interest.
I hope this helps.
Good Luck

You would file single. It depends on your income and how much more you have in deductions. Also, it's too late to do anything for 2006 on deductions. Unless you want to contribute to an IRA, if you have earned income, W-2 or SE income.
