We might need more info such as which model of iPod and its capacity. However, for now, plug it in. I assume iTunes normally launches after a bit when you plug in your iPod. if iTunes doesn't launch within a minute, launch it. Once your iPod shows up in the list on the left, click on it. At the bottom of iTunes it should show the capacity and how full it is. Fullness is the only reason I can think of as to why you can't import other songs. They have to be in mp3 or mp4 format to import, mind you.

Maybe the hardrive is damaged, book an appointment with the Apple Store Concierge to calrify the problem - its free.

If it is under a year old - it is under manufacture warranty - return it to the store where purchased and they will give you a new one. Songs will be lost though unless you have them backed up. Sometimes ipods just stop working....!
