My cat likes to sit on the windowsill in the dining room. Our neighbours cat sits on the other side and she starts growling really deeply. Sometimes they start scratching at the window and spitting. They're both girls. Help?!?

It's a territory thing. Your cat doesn't like a strange cat coming on HER territory and she's saying, "You go away, you bad cat!" The neighbor's cat is saying, "MY territory!"

You should try to discourage the other cat from coming because it can cause behavior problems with your cat. She'll get frustrated and may start spraying (females do sometimes) or take out her anger on you or other members of the household. Cats have a lot of trouble understanding property lines.

I have cats and have had various cats for -- well, let's just say a LOOOONNNG time.

Well, from experience, cats don't like other cats (if they weren't raised together). It has nothing to do with their sex. They are very territorial, which means, when your cat sees the neighbours' cat she feels a threat to her territory. If you had put your cat and your neighbour's cat together they would have started a really nasty fight.
First of all, don't pet the other cat, otherwise your cat will know and be hostile towards you.
Second, those two cats will probably stop growling at each other at some point but there is really nothing you can do with it.
The only thing you can do is to make sure these two will never meet or see each other. Try talking with your neighbour about it and maybe you can work something out together.
Good luck!

Is your cat spayed? Is your neighbor's cat spayed? If the answer on your part is no, go and get her spayed. This is a territorial thing. 2 spayed cats are less likely to be territorial. Think if this was going on outside, this would be one big cat fight. Your lucky that one or both cats aren't spraying, yes females will spray. My fixed females still do, so you may want to look for spraying marks in your dining room or the rest of the home. There's not much you can do in regards to the neighbors cat. except ask them to keep it in and let them know if there's been any damage done by their cat. By law they are responsible for any damages done by their cat. One thing is to try and distract your cat away from the window when the other cat is there.

ha ha ha... that is so funny... but I do understand your concern... the stress on the cats can't be good in the long run. it is just the image of these two neighbor cats hissing and spitting at each other at opposite windows.

Ok, this is my suggestion. Buy one of theose plug-in feel good essences for your cat in the pet store. These flower essences or pheremones trigger a feeling of well-bing to the cat or give out scents that signal "love and freindship" to cats When kitty is at the window, plug in the scent or spray it (depends what kind you buy). Ask your neighbor to do the same at her place. Eventually, sooner or later, whatever you decide to do, the two cats will realize that they cannot get at each other and give up their posturing.

I have had that same problem. Especially at night, the cat next door triggers our security light.
The only way i found to stop it was to put a blind over the window.
The other option you could try is buy that anti scratching spray and put that on the outside sill, cats hate the stuff.

Well cats do have there own language so maybe they say mean things to each other or maybe they fight over a tom cat that goes near the house
( make sure they never meet(personally) or your cat may get hurt

Why is this interior the style class??? do no longer decrease your cat open. Take your cat to the vet. once you get to the vet's, call your friends and clarify what you think of happened.

Time for the water spray bottle. It isn't painful but lets the other cat know,"Hey, that's not acceptable"

A realistic plastic snake should do the trick, as cats are petrified of snakes.
