My family has a basset hound too. There has never been an overall body odor problem with him, however his breath always, always smells like death. I would suggest trying to find a way to keep his mouth clean and that may get rid of a big part of your problem.

Never give a dog a bath more than once a week cuz it will dry out there skin, i had a dauchshaund once and he smelled cuz hounds and i think all dogs are kinda like skunks in the way that they have a "holding" area for spray but dogs can't spray it so it just builds up. You can have it surgicly removed or have the vet clean it out like once a month plus it might be his ears or breath. I'd take him to the vet.

As others have said do not bathe him so often. You might try a deodorizing shampoo. You can mix a deodorizing shampoo with household products. Mix equal parts of Baking Soda, peroxide and Dawn dishsoap. First put the baking soda, then add peroxide. Let the soda dissolve before adding Dawn. Shampoo your dog with it, letting it soak for a couple of minutes.Rinse and towel dry.
Take to the vet for a checkup- odor could be due to an infection of the ears or some other sort.

Definitely take him to the vet to check his ears, teeth, and skin. He may have developed a bacterial or, more likely, a yeast infection in his ears. Dogs with floppy ears are more likely to develop ear problems because the canals do not get as much air circulation as dogs with prick (upright) ears. Also, bassets have wrinkly skin which can harbor warmth and moisture, thus creating an ideal environment for infection. They often drool, which can cause them to have a smelly chin and throat, or can create a moist dermatitis. One way to help this is to clean the wrinkles every day with a soft cloth and warm water, or with special bath wipes made for dogs.

Hounds are kind of smelly cuz they have a lot of oils in their skin.
I would go to one of the kennel supply sites & buy a gallon of deodorizing shampoo. He will never be totally odor free - cuz that's the nature of this type of breed. But the shampoo will help a LOT. It may seem expensive - but it's highly concentrated. I bathe my dogs weekly & a gallon lasts over a year.

PS - Skyhoss is right - make sure to check his teeth & ears too!
