745 navy personnel have received the medal as of May of 2003

From the first award on March 25.1863 to 6 people there have been 3,461 medals of honor. These are from 3,456 seperate acts of heroism performed by 3,442 individuals (including 9 "unknowns").

It is in the thousands. I think it was 900 and something before Desert storm.
