We have a large dog that constantly hits our sliding glass door when he is outside and wants in. We have tried everything we know to get him to stop. Any suggestions? (He also, scratches at the utility door when he wants out) It's a my way or the highway kind of thing for him, not an abusive or neglected problem.

DOMINANCE.

Your dog is the boss of you. He says so.

Ignore the door issue for two seconds and think of the big picture.

Can you get him to do a lie down? Can you get him to do a stop on command? Can you get him to do anything on command or is it only if he feels like it and maybe if you have a treat AND are lucky that day?

If you want to get him to respond to you, beating his behind won't work if he is indeed dominant. It will just tick him off and if you keep ticking off the boss, his stubborn dominant self will smack you back.

Perhaps sending him to dog school or you going to class with the dog is what it will take to break through this one. The members of the family need to know how to get the dog to respond to many a command such as "lie down".

Are you able to walk the dog on a leash? And he will stay behind you on the leash and not ahead of you? Like in a heel position.

That is why I am thinking if it is a large breed of dog, your best bet is to actually send him to school for a few weeks and then have all the family members work on giving the dog commands.

but not everybody all in the same day all at once or he'll just crash and burn and ignore you all.

AGRESSSION against the dog is not needed. Dominance IS. Even if in little ways in general around the house. He needs to take you seriously. He is like a bad teenager and you need to have a sit down with him.

Hopefully the police will read what Brantalla wrote and use a stun gun on him and then arrest him (or her ) for animal abuse. And they wonder why they have it so hard in society.

The dog is probably young and just needs you to do some thinking. In the end, dogs are dogs and each has a personality. You may have to adjust yourself to him and put a covering or piece of wood on the utility door. That's his way of talking to you. When you tell him not to scratch he's going to scratch becuase he has to go take a leak. How is he going to tell you he has to go if you won't let him scratch? Maybe has tried just sitting and waiting and no one noticed. Defend your dog, get in his shoes and you will have a better understanding of him. When you have to go (as you probably do 5 or 6 times a day, make believe you are a dog, put some duck tape on your mouth so you can't talk and get down on your hands and knees and wait at the door and see the door magically open - not. You have to make a noise to get somone to open the door for you. You knew the dog couldn't open doors when you got him. Raise your expectations of yourself and lower them for your dog and the both of you will be a lot happier.

THey make doggy doors specifically to fit sliding doors, I would suggest this....you can also try an e-collar, but I personally don't like them much except in extreme conditions..(dangerous for doggy)-but if it's a matter of your dog losing its home, I would give it a try..but please, first try the doggy door.

I'd get him a doggy door and teach him how to use it. and do not use a stun gun or crossbow or any weapon at all on an animal to punish it, unless you are hunting but thats another story.......
