I am really glad you have such an oppinion about The New Testament. It's a very rare thing in a non-believer.
To answer your Q. , i think that if you really want to believe in Christ you should take literally everyhing that is written in the book. Another good piece of advice is to get a friend that is more experienced with the Scripture. you two can just talk things through if you have troubles understanding things and also just have some fun!
Joining a church is the best thing you can do. We don't bite... rather, more mature christians can be a lot of help and support. :)
And lastly, just talk to God about it. If you really want to be a chistian, lock yourself in your room, sit down on the couch and tell Him to fill you up with His Spirit. God loves you way too much to refuse you that favor.
I'll pray for you too. :)

I believe Jesus existed. I know there is a hundred year gap between him and the oldest know recorded manuscript mentioning him.
Most quotable book? That's debatable.
I'm a taoist.
Feeling vacant? Hmm. Normal. Try doing something to help other people out.

First of all, you may want to consider asking the LORD to open the eyes of your understanding; and make alive his Word in your heart.
Call on, and confess the LORD Jesus, believing in your heart that God has raised him from dead and to save you from sin. Then repent of those sins, and be baptized in the name of the Lord Jesus and you will receive the gift of God's Holy Spirit.
When you receive the Holy Spirit then shall you, "know the truth and the truth will make you free" to have faith in the "Anointed One" of God; who is our Lord, Jesus Christ!
Your faith will come by hearing, and hearing by God's Word, the preached Word, taught Word or just meditating and listening to the audible Word of God. [The Holy Bible Old/New Testament]
Having faith in God and obeying his Word is the answer, not Christianity per-se because "many are called, but few are chosen."
1. Believe God.
2. Accept what Jesus did for you.
3. Call on him and ask him to save you.
4. Confess what you believe about him
5. Repent of your sins and change your way of thinking.
6. Be baptized in Jesus Name
7. Be filled with the Holy Spirit
Stay in God's Word and I pray your understanding has been enlightened!
Peace,
Hope

John the baptist came as a voice in the wilderness (are you there?) saying "Prepare ye the way of the Lord, make his paths straight." This was fulfillment of prophecy from Isaiah 40:3 The voice of him that crieth in the wilderness, Prepare ye the way of the LORD, make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Isaiah lived 700 years before Jesus. He also said in Isaiah 62:10 Go through, go through the gates; prepare ye the way of the people; cast up, cast up the highway; gather out the stones; lift up a standard for the people.
11 Behold, the LORD hath proclaimed unto the end of the world, Say ye to the daughter of Zion, Behold, thy salvation cometh; behold, his reward is with him, and his work before him.
So, the message was to make the path straight, and cast out the stones. Sin in our lives, no matter how small or seemingly insignificant deters us from hearing the Lord's call. The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin and we repent, we cast up the stones from out of the path and we make his way straight. Our heart is then ready to receive the light of the glorious gospel of Christ.
edit:
You're doing this already but keep this verse in mind. Romans 10:17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.

If it leaves you feeling vacant, then it is not for you. Christians will tell you it is the only way, and that the vacancy you feel is a fault of your own nature. This is a lie. Achieve faith by finding what you believe in, and by believing in yourself.

Do I believe in Jesus, and how do I believe in Jesus joins with Why I believe in Jesus.
One simple verse allows the Holy Spirit to witness to you:
The Bible has over 100 of his verses with his direct quotes. What seems to be important to Jesus is for us to get along with each other.
Proof: Jesus said,
"If you do not forgive others, your father in Heaven will not forgive you"
How much more clear could Jesus have been?
When you forgive those who have hurt you, you will know the answer to all your questions.

I didn't believe in HIM...I thank HIM for waiting for me; when I started to read the Bible with prayer (I first prayed that GOD will help me understand what I was reading!) things changed in my mind...and I am sure HE LOVES US ALL. If you are sincere you'll find LOVE. Because GOD IS LOVE.

Faith , hope and charity are all gifts from God, graces, they became infused into your soul in baptism, you have to pray so that God will give you the grace to live them.
