Jesus could not have commanded you to do this.In the old testament we lived under the law but when Jesus went to the cross things changed. We now live under Grace. The whole point of Jesus going to the cross was so we could be forgiven for our sins.You don't have to gouge your eye or chop off any body parts. You simply have to be sincere to god and ask forgiveness and accept Jesus for who he really is.If you truly accept Jesus you will genuinely try to stop your sin-full ways.We are not perfect and god knows this. That's why he sent his son to us.Your body is a temple and you should respect it not defile it.By Grace you are saved through faith,not of works lest anyone should boast.GRACE::

Jesus would never tell you to defile your body but he would love to forgive you. That's his whole reason for coming to earth.

The parable uses metaphors to signify the degree of importance in no longer doing the wrong things. Taking the passage literally would not only be stupid, in itself, it would also be wrong.
