If you are single and you earned under $8450, then you don't have to file. Depending on how much you paid in, it may or may not be worth it to file, though because you can file for free through e-file on the net. If you are married and filing jointly, the minimum to file is $16,900. If you are married and filing separately, the minimum is $3300. If you are filing head of household then the minimum is $10,850. If you are self employed you must file if you owe any self employment tax.

If it's all on a W-2, no you don't. But if anything was withheld for federal income taxes, you can file to get it refunded to you.
If it was from self-employment, which would probably be on a 1099, then yes you have to file.

You only have to file if the $3000 is self-employment income or you had federal witholding on your income.
Or if you are claimed as a dependent on someone else's return and most of it is investment income.

You would not have a requirement to file, but if you had Federal tax withheld, you would want to , to get a refund of what you paid in

If you make under $7500, you don't have to file, unless there is a refund due you, and you want it.
