Your dog can hear sounds you can't. Your dog is probably 'talking' to another dog barking in the distance. Take your dog into the hall with you, when he stops barking tell him he's a good boy and give him a tit-bit. When he barks again tell him 'No', when he stops tell him he's good and give a titbit. Keep doing this until your dogs learns what you want him to do.

Good luck. Only kindness should be the way of training an animal.

When the dog barks shout quiet and either use a spray bottle to spray water in its face from about a metre distance or get a rattle bottle ( bottle with stones/pennies inside) to make a noise which will startle the dog and when they are quiet praise them!

Well u can either choose those anti-bark collar, either d one that sprays a citron based cold water under d chin or u can always choose d other one which is more expensive ( i tink ) that sprays a cold air under d chin, tink thats much better than emittin electrical shocks to ur dog, dont u tink? :o) or better yet...train him to listen to commands n award him when he's behavin ( always good to bribe lol ) soon enuf he wud know how to keep quiet..perhaps he/her is a lil too excited? Good luck! btw wot kinda dog u have? lil terriers n smaller dogs luvs to yap about lol :o)

Put It In Another Room And Tell It To Be Quiet

NO!!!! never ever tie its mouth closed, i'd look into getting him/her a bark collar, it will give him/her a light shock whenever they bark and teach them not to. Also the barking may be him/her wanting to play or wanting attention.

Take the dog into another room and play with him or her, then give it a bone. Then you will have one contented doggy.
