Well... If your looking for a big dog then trust me golden retrievers are definitely the best!! They are really friendly and also really cute and adorable. But on the other hand if your looking for a small dog... I would recommend a pug or a beagle.. but definitely NOT a Chihuahua!!!Both pugs and beagles are amazing dogs to have and real reliable friendly companions! If you want a medium size dog it would be almost compulsary to buy it..!! Well... i hope this helps..
Goodbye

It depends on the person's personality, because any breed can be a good companion dog. I personally like French Bulldogs as companion dogs, but I have friends that think that their dogs are better companion dogs. It just depends.
Also, I agree with INFOMINDS that posted earlier. I grew up with a Golden/Lab mix and she was a great dog. We got her from a Golden Retriever breeder for $50 because she was an "accident" and she turned into a really great dog (but she was a pain until she got to about 3 years old).

That depends on the type of person you are. If you are active and love to run and play sports then maybe a shepard or Border Collie. If you are calm and reserved then maybe a Basset Hound or a Newfoundlander. If you are into hunting a Beagle, German Shor-hair, Vizsla, or a Lab. If you are versatile then a member of the terrier group may be goo such as a Jack Russel or Rat Terrier. If you are looking for a social dog that is an in between maybe a Rottweiler, Lhasa Apso, Shiba Inu, or a Poodle. Your personality will determine what dog is best suited for you.

A word of caution: Someone suggested a Lhasa Apso, and they are absolutely right! They are WONDERFUL dogs! Loving, devoted, and fiercely protective!
They were bred in the mountians of Tibet to be watchdogs, and they are VERY good at that. They also have tons of personality! They are small (not toy--but "non-sporting"), long-haired (needing regular grooming, but don't shed much), and EXTREMELY opinionated and stubborn!!! That is a very well acknowledged trait of this breed. If you don't have a sense of humor and can't handle a dog that will "sass" you to make it's point then I would suggest not getting one.
I got mine from an Animal Rescue League. He is the most PERFECT companion for me, but I can handle his individuality. They are not good obedience dogs like some breeds. They are too individualistic.
If you like a dog with spunk, personality, INTELLIGENCE and character then this breed certainly has it. And he is the most loving, cuddly lil' guy I could have ever asked for! Such a sweetie! Good luck in your quest...

The famous Golden Retrievers are almost always a safe bet, but mostly any dog can become a great companion dog if you train him/her with love and disipline. I own a long-haired Dachshund, and he is super loyal. If you think about getting a Dachshund, I would go with the long-haired version, since these seem to be more relaxed and easier to handle.
Hope you find your companion dog!

i would have to say a golden retriever because they are very friendly dogs not so hard to train but lots of fun to have around but a down side to having a golden retriever if its a pure bread then they usually have hip problems so i might want to go with a mix with a lab or something because it can cost you a lot not only for a pure bread golden but also the hip surgery is a lot of money too. but that's if you want a bigger dog. personally i like big dogs if you want a smaller dog i would go with a beagle but they howl a lot but they are both good companions.

Female yellow lab/golden retriever mix. Not from a store or puppy mill. Excellent with kids, very friendly. If want purebred go with the Golden Retriever... not male yellow lab (can be too protective and agressive).
For a smaller breed .... try a Havanese.... expensive but very gentle and great companion. Go with female. Male tends to be a little high strung... but very attentive still.

That depends upon your personality & lifestyle.
If you like to sit on the couch & read & watch tv - a shi tzu might be the breed for you as they are very calm & love to cuddle.
If you want a more active breed, but also very loyal, you could get a collie or other working type dog.
You can go to the pedigree website & research to determine what type of pet is best for you!
