I am a female soccer player, looking to play soccer in college. How would I go about finding a school to play for? What training should I do and what teams should I try to play for?

If you are any good, you should try University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. They have the best women's soccer program in the US. If you know Mia Hamm, she graduated from there. Try to increase your stamina (maybe practice with the guys a few times if their coach doesn't mind). Also try to play matches and work on moves with the people on your team when it's not soccer season at school.

It depends on how serious you are. There are great schools with great programs at all different levels, from NAIA, NCAA Division III (Pacific Lutheran) up to Division I (UNC, of course; but there are other schools like the University of Portland, Santa Clara and Notre Dame to name a few). The best place to look for a team in your area is http://soccer.org/home.aspx. It's best to find a competitive club team where you'll play with the best players and against the best teams in your area, go to tournaments and be exposed to different college coaches. You can also start contacting college coaches in your sophomore year of high school. Definitely get yourself involved with a club that pays its coaches, sounds snobbish, but it's definitely the way to go. Good luck and feel free to email me if you have any other questions. I am a former college soccer player and still have connections in that arena.

You may want to check out the "The Sports Source Book 16th Edition Women's Guide." It's a very helpful tool to get started. I used it (the Men's guide) when I was looking for schools to play for and attend. Here's a description of the book and Good Luck:

The Sport Source® is the definitive guide to collegiate soccer programs in the United States. It includes detailed academic and athletic profiles for college soccer programs within NCAA - Division I, II, III, NAIA, NCAA and NJCAA affiliations. A special introductory section outlines the various steps in the college recruitment and selection process with tips on evaluating athletic programs, effective communication with college coaches, and resume preparation. It's a must for any soccer player whose goal is to play college soccer! 781 pages.
