Global warming, the use of fossil fuels, pollution of air caused by use of these fossil fuels, land and water pollution, the fact that recycling isn't mandatory in every single state in the USA, and quickly diminishing rain forests are just a few of the environmental issues off the top of my head.

Denial by most people of any limit to their consumerist asspiration. as described as long ago as ancient Greece by Epicurius.
Human ignorance -
Human belief in unlimited industrial & economic growth and lack of human awareness of life sustaining systems & interconectedness.
resulting in unconstrained human population growth and consumption;
Human greed and short term self-interest.
The fundamental environmental issue is people's culture, their world view, morality etc.
Do we want to live in happy, healthy life-sustaining communities; or in one that only measures GDP & aquisition of more personal possesions?
