Is it possible to induce arthritis in a cat? He loves to be smacked on the butt and we don't want to?

And please do not misinterpret this as animal abuse, it is something he likes, we are not hurting him.

I, too, have a cat that likes to be "smacked" on the butt. As long as you know you are not hurting your kitty, don't worry about it.
I have had cats for close to 54 years and have never had a cat develop arthritis from rough play. One cat I had for close to 19 years. Even though she liked to be played with roughly at times and smacked on the bottom, she never developed arthritis.
I guess there are cats who enjoy rough play just as there are people who enjoy being man-handled sometimes. Personally, I don't understand this, but who am I to judge.
The only way would be if its in the cats genetics or if he were to break a bone. Then arthritis could develop.
So don't worry! Your cat will let you know if you get too rough, either by biting or clawing you. And, no, it is not animal abuse if he enjoys himself.

No, regarding arthritis. Four's abit young, unless you see him limp or crimish when he jumps. The smacking on the rear is part of his sexual instincts. My male kitten loved for you the pat very fast right above is tail. The longer we did it the higher his butt went up & lower his head went down. You see this alot in neutered cats.
