You can buy fire bricks from most good hardware stores in different sizes. They are not too expensive. Cement with fire cement. You will get a better heat output with these and the fire will stay hot longer.

splatwease is absolutely correct,i would like to add that if you have any kind of void behind fire bricks you fill this with a weak mix of cement & brick rubble,this will allow expansion & stop your fireplace from exploding.
