I have a jar of dried sliced beef from Armor. Someone told me I can make creamed chipped beef from it on toast. she told me a funny name that it is also referred to but that involves swearing so I cant really say it. all i can say is s**t on a shingle. does anyone know how to make this? The way it was discribed to me it sounds really good.

sometimes known as SOS for those too polite to use any toilet humor, is a food that in essence consists of chipped beef cooked in a el cheapo white sauce (usually milk and cream thickened with flour), and served on toast. I suppose the beef represents the **** and the toast serves as the shingle.

To make it you do the following:

Put the milk, cream, and beef into a saucepan along with some black pepper and whatever other spices you think would make this more edible.
Heat, stirring constantly, until the beef is rehydrated and the sauce is hot.
Slowly add flour to thicken, just as you would to make gravy.
Serve on toast, buttered if possible.

As far as I can tell both the meal and the name originate from the Army mess halls during World War II. It was easy to make, lots of calories, lots of protein, and a captive audience.

Well, in the Military they called it "SOS", in the mess halls.( LOL) But anyways, the best & easiest way is to tell you to soften the dried beef with a little water on a slow simmer on the stove or microwave. Then if you know how to make home-made (white gravy), do it, or other wise use an instant cream gravy mix you can buy. When you have the beef softened, then combine the gravy & beef, season with pepper & salt....Wa..Laaaaaa......you have creamed chipped beef or ""SOS''''.. no bad words used,,,,LOL.... its good!!!!!! If its good enough for our soldiers,,,,,its good enough for """US''''.......GOOD LUCK!!!!!

It's called chipped beef at our house but when my dad was in the army, he called it what you called it! My husband and boys love it.

Make a basic white sauce, see recipe, and add your beef torn or cut into small pieces, and some peas. Stir on low heat till hot, and serve over toast or split biscuits.

BASIC WHITE SAUCE
3 tbsp. butter
3 tbsp. flour
1 c. milk
1/4 tsp. salt
Dash pepper
Melt butter in medium skillet over low heat. Add flour and stir to paste. Slowly add milk until desired thickness is reached.
