A few years ago, I purchased this book from Barnes and Noble called "Cater your own Wedding" by Michael Flowers adn Donna Bankhead. It is a great for helping plan your own reception. The guide includes instructions for how to prepare each food item, how much to prepare depending on your number of guests, how to arrange your buffet tables, and how to arrange your floor plan for your reception overall.
Here are some suggested menu items:
-chicken, tuna, and ham salad finger sandwiches
-fruit and cheese trays with assorted crackers
-relish and vegetable trays
-shrimp. crab, and salmon pastry puffs/boats
-marinated vegetables
-meatballs
-miniature tropical fruit skewers
-roast beef rollups
-chocolate dipped strawberry trees
-regular and decaffeinated coffee
-miniture desserts
-citrus fruit punch

I am doing party subs from Subway. Its cheap and most everyone likes sandwiches. Runs about $2.20 a person for the subs and then I'm having some cheese trays and chips and veggies. All finger foods and they can sit or stand or whatever.

For a buffet type dinner, it is always good to have two meats, two vegetables, and two compliments. Then a salad. Also have appetizers, even if it something simple because people have to wait awhile to eat.

Pasta dishes are always good.
I recently attended a reception where there were a couple warm dishes to go along with the meat & cheese sandwich fixin's. It was good food, a WONDERFUL band and a great time.

We are getting a "Taco Guy". Its popular in California. Its very inexpensive and really really good. The guy sets himself up kind of bbq style and he makes 3 different kinds of meat, people line up and they tell him what meatthey want then they add there own stuff...The taco guy brings the salsa ( onions, tomatoes, etc.) and plates and silverware. Its really laid back and very good! some of the party rental stores will have one they know or try small taco stands.
