I would call the police and use the 'minimum force necessary' to detain the spitter pending arrival of the police.
Then sign a sworn statement as a witness and make sure the DA can contact me to testify at the trial.
'Street justice' is not justice. Justice is dragging the perp in front of a judge & jury and making him explain his actions.

Hot tar and feather the spitter and drag him through the streets in shame and let everyone bombard the spitter with anything they can find.
Our troups deserve the utmost respect and id be proud to see all our troups out there in public with the support they deserve
I am proud of all the troups that do the job most cowards wont do which is protect us and protect our countries and i personally would like to see national service brought back.
Half the trouble in all our countries is many children are brought up ill mannered and with no respect so is there any wonder they grow up spitting at our troups.
Keep up the good job guys and gals in the troups and your jobs are not in vain. You are apreciated

I can guarantee the spitter would NEVER be able to spit at anything or anyone for the rest of their miserable, pathetic life.

Possibly spit back, with a mouthful of lit kerosene. Or possibly stand in the way of the spit, because once the spit hits me I am legally being assaulted and can respond "in self defense" with one of three options. Hurt (the most appropriate in this situation), Mame (only to be used if there is a high degree of chance you will be hurt), or Kill (only to be used if there is a high degree of chance you will be maimed or killed).
However in this case there may or may not be a high degree of chance you will be killed, because they could have a mouthful of bloody aids.
But most likely just swing a hand into the balls as you cough and then say "whew excuse me" and as they fall to the ground pretend that nothing happened.

I got out of the Army and bought a house in a nice neighborhood and I was sitting on the front porch smoking, and some old lady walking her dog walked by and spit in my yard and gave me a dirty look. What a *****!! I am curious who these people are that know all about you, and your privacy, and I get dirty looks in public and **** them!! They have no idea what I went through. Why do people have to know dirt on everybody? It's time we do some real prying into peoples lives and start weeding these guns out! This is beyond no freedom, it's a violation of human rights and sanctity. This is war, and the war is here on our soil!!

The spitter would find it difficult to spit for the next week or 2.

I know that my husband, a US soldier, would have more decency than to even dignify the "spitter" with any kind of response, whether it be verbal or physical.
Why would he sink to their level?

It's outrageous behavior, and I am always appalled when I hear of something like that. Mocking and disrespecting the very person who gave you your freedom to walk down the street in Chicago.

Street justice would work just perfectly, and I would be more than happy to do my part to provide it.
