So I have my hard drive partitioned into two parts. C: and D:. Drive D is used for saving all my files and data, and C is strictly for programs. I recently reformatted C and installed Windows XP again. While installing, setup recommended fixing registry issues on D that it found. I thought it would be a good idea. When I finally got the computer up and running, half of the files on D will not open. If they are pictures they appear empty. The music will not play. The word documents appear scrambled. They still have their original size in kilobyes or megabytes but don't appear to contain any necessary information. I am hoping somehow I can restore the files. Thanks for any help.

Do you know what backup is? Your D drive files were dependant on your old c drive format. You lost them when you reformatted C. Next time backup your files to a disk. Reformat the whole drive and get rid of D
