some answers were a little harsh. i don't think people understand the type of problem... some people have depression, and/or prone to the depression side of the bipolar spectrum. i, on the other hand, am more prone to manic episodes. when i get a job i go to far. i work too hard and get too stressed and it sends me into a psycho-aggitated manic state where i can't sit still that lead to psychotic breaks complete with auditory hallucinations eventually ending up in th hospital for supervision staying anywhere from one week to three, so for everyone who is going to answer bashing my need for disability,... please save it.

I'm 20 years old and live in Arkansas. I'm on Social Security Disability for my bipolar disorder, and also have Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Clinical Depression, and Anxiety. If you are on medication and your disorder is bad enough to where you can't function normally in daily life (i.e. go to work or college), then you might want to talk to your psychologist/doctor about what he thinks about you trying to get qualified for SSI Disability. If he agrees that you have a good chance to be eligible for it, have him write a letter stating so. I was denied the first time, so I wrote letters to the Atty. General of my state and contacted as many state officials as I could and let them know what I was facing. I collected all of their responses and the letter from my doctor and signed up. It took a few weeks for me to get notified that I was eligible for SSI Disability. Just don't give up if you're denied once or twice, keep on pushing through. If you're denied a third time, you can appeal the decison and hire an attorney. Just make sure you're getting on Disability for the right reasons. I'm using it for the health insurance since prescriptions to treat my illnesses are so expensive. I hope I was able to help you out.

Nonsense!!! I have battled bipolar/depressiona ll of my life! I "also" have worked for 24+ years!! Without my job...I would be over the edge!!! Use a job as an outlet!! Staying at home and doing nothing just gives depression fuel for the fire friend! Think about all the physical handicaps in this world...people who are flat on their back and CAN NOT work! That is what disability is for...I know many inidividuals, who are considered handicapped (ie in wheelchairs, etc.) they work and function---very well!!! I think disability has been "used" by members of society too frequent as an escape from work! Furthermore, in my state (North Carolina) it appears that the individuals who really need it...either can not get it or go thru a long, time consuming ordeal to attain it! Yet, the other groups (who do not need it) can get it rapidly!! I know a guy who was a member of this gym and he was on physical disability!!!!!!!!!!!!! So WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

people are freakin harsh. I'm 24 and borderline personality disorder/bipolar/anxiety. I take my meds and try to function normally but I just can't. So everyone here needs to save all their b.s. Some people cope and function differently. I think I'm more than qualified to get disabilty. Don't let these ignorant people get you down. Good luck.

i dont know why you couldnt get disability for it. i know a guy who is about 24 and gets disability for have depression which i think is insane because thats just telling him its ok to stay at home and be depressed instead of getting out of the house which would help someone with depression feel a lot better but i dont work for the government but anyway yeah you should be able to if its bad enough

my sister is bipolar and when she was younger she did lots of drugs hard drugs , she gets disability and she really shouldn't if she was to follow her doctors orders and take her meds on a regular schedule instead of what she is currently doing which includes her melds with plenty of alchol than she'd be able to live a normal life i can't stand that so many people who really don't need this and apply for it it makes it twice as hard for people like my niece who is autistic and will never be able to work or even live by her self , her parents have applied for this for her for two years she is almost 18 and her care is there responsibility for ever they woth work and her dad even has two jobs so they can afford to sent her to a special school in our community but she is deserving of extra assistance but can't get it because of people like my sister and you who don't realize that even though you have disabilities it's something that can be controlled and you can actually work i live in fl with my niece and my sister lives in pa in my life I've met many people who collect disability and more than half are just cheating the system sorry I'm being so blunt but honestly it really makes me angry
