My grandma raised 10, gave birth to 9. She never worked a day in her life. My grandpa busted his butt though and there was no welfare back then. Out of all the kids she had, 1 is an alcoholic and one has been to jail because of drugs. Now, two bad eggs out of 10 isn't bad. I agree with you on this. I'd love to have a whole football team of children. I know I could never afford that many, so 3 maybe 4 will be my limit.

The Welfare system needs to change, if you think that you can properly take care of X number of kids then go ahead, but if you notice, and this is not a overall stat just a thing I noticed in my home town.. The highly educated parents have one or two children, while the less educated parents had more. This could be for a variety of reasons and I know some great parents that have like 6 kids. My husband and I are both highly educated, I am masters and above but we aren't going to have children probably at all. This is all personal preference but some other reasons for large families, include but not limited to Profession, you life on a farm, you have kids to work on the farm. Religion, you don't believe in birth control you are going to have more than one kid. China has a set limit on the amount of children one can have because of overpopulation issues. This is becoming an issue all around the world. Should the US say You can only have X kids per income. No, but the US needs to tweak the system and stop allowing a lady with 13 kids to be milking off the system while the parents of two kids have to work full time jobs and have the kids in day care just to make ends meat.

I am currently pregnant with #4 and #5 and, although these last two were not planned, I am very happy that we are on our way to having a large family.
Statistically, large families DO support themselves. When I see and/or read or hear people assume that large families typically recieve welfare it infuriates me. Statistically, they do NOT. There are woman out there who have 2-3 kids on the governments tab and no one ever thinks to say anything about them, but if a woman has 10 kids- it's almost assumed she is on welfare assistance. - And that's very sad. (the assumption)
There will never be a limit on children we are allowed to have as long as this country remains the United States of America. It is our God given right to procreate. Some Christians (such as myself) believe that children are a gift from God.
"Lo, children ARE a heritage of the Lord, the fruit of the womb is His reward..." Should the government limit the number of children one could have, they would be infringing upon my religious beliefs- coincidentally, the very beliefs this country was once founded on.
So- my answer- NO. :-P

I am 34 weeks pregnant with number 6. I have always taken care of my kids myself...I bust my butt in the tool and die trade. This is my first "welfare baby". I got laid off 3 weeks after I got pregnant (didn't know I was preg yet then). I was trying to get another job when I found out, then I started to show and no one would hire me. So I stayed on my unemployment until it ran out last month, and that supported us. So from now until the baby is born I'm on food stamps (not cash assistance) and as soon as baby is born I will go back to work. I believe that the system is there for emergencies such as mine (hell I've paid into it for 20 years, and getting laid off in the auto industry in Mich is more common than not now) But the people who have never worked and use it or the "professional"welfare mothers do turn my stomach...

I think that putting a limit on how many children a woman is allowed to have would be another way for the government to control us in a so-called "free" country! But; I do believe that it is morally wrong to keep having a bunch of children if you are not going to take responsibility for them and live off of welfare! I have 6 kids; I am a stay at home mother and housewife, but my husband works a fulltime job. We have never had our kids on foodstamps, medicaide, or welfare. And we are wanting at least on more child! I take good care of all my kids and don't think I should be told whether I can have another one or not. That's up to God to say; not our f*cked up government or the people around me!

There should be a limit of one government supported birth per family. If a couple has 15 children on welfare, the 14 oldest should be placed in foster homes or put up for adoption. This would change the welfare mentality at least somewhat. This is only an idea though; with the new minimum wage it would be more impossible than it is today.

I believe that people can have as many children as they want. I've seen families with 5 children and they seem very well off. It all depends on what kind of person you are. I do agree with your last sentence though. But for now, let's just pray that something similar to the plot of "Among the Hidden" never happens...

I think it's more than a question of welfare. We're outgrowing our space. I have 3 kids, so I don't have any room to talk, but if you look what's happening in China and Japan, we maybe should consider not trying to expand our population so rapidly by having more than 2 per couple.

If your raising them on welfare yes, If your working and taking care of your own no.....
Getting help from welfare is one thing. But their are alot of parents that wont help themselves and make welfare a way of life, not a hand up !
