The reason the answer and common sense don't seem to match is this:

* The frictional force is NOT dependent on area, only on the materials in contact (coefficient of friction of rubber/asphalt interface) and the normal force (usually vehicle weight, also a component of acceleration/deceleration of a vehicle can contribute to this normal force).

* However, the ability of the vehicle's tire to withstand the frictional force IS dependant on the area of contact. Force over area is pressure, also stress, which determines if the material yields or not. In other words, with a small contact area, the tire skids (leaving black streaks on the road) and with large contact area it sticks. That is why race cars run slicks. More contact area means the rubber compounds can withstand higher friction forces on the vehicle's tires.

The frictional force is not dependent on the contact area. The frictional stress IS dependent on contact area.

According to my Physics class, the answer is no. Area is not a factor. Just the total force. Hence the coefficient of friction does not depend on Area involved.

Only to a certain degree because friction occurs at only certain spots to a molecular level.
