it depends. What knocked the hen up? is the egg a mutation from the original creature that used to reproduce asexually. or did two different creatures hook up up and the results was the first hen????

It would probably have to be the egg, if by 'egg' we mean 'fertilized ovum' because two parents which were not chickens would create an offspring that was a chicken.

However, on the other hand, evolution is something that affects populations not individuals, so you might want to argue that 'chickens' didn't appear until a significant proportion of the population of proto-chickens exhibited sufficient chicken-ness.

Obviously though, chickens aren't born, they hatch.
