Well, my daughters a really smart girl. She gets honor roll and all of that stuff. So, anyway, when it comes time for class projects, she gets paired with all of the not-so-brilliant kids who don't care about grades-and she ends up doing all of the work! I asked the teacher why she paired her up with them, and she said because she thought she might teach the kids and help them. Well I know she does but how is it helping when the kids don't even listen? What should I do? She ends up doing all the work!!!

Yes it is. I graduated as valedictorian. In science class, I got paired with a student whose GPA was .076. HORRIBLE! This was a physics project, and we had to create a minigolf course and show the acceleration, etc. I did everything because I knew that if the other person did anything, we would certainly fail. So, to save my grade, I did everything. WE got a 98%. Repeat. WE BOTH GOT THE SAME GRADE! This is a bad idea. It doesn't teach the other kid anything, they just sit and let the other person do all the work. Ticks you off, doesn't it...

I went through something similar with my 11 yr old. He is in the 6th grade taking 8th grade science. The teacher does (or did) the same thing. Only difference is that my son did his part and the other kid half-a**ed his part. They worked on the project in class and during study hall, but because of the grade difference they did not have study hall together. When the time came for the presentation, they both recieved a 55 for the project. My son was so upset that he asked the teacher to go to the nurse and called me. I talked to the teacher about the grading and he told me that I should have made my son do the other kids part if he wanted a good grade. When we talked to the principle he graded the project based on who did which part. Then he reassigned my son to a different science class.

yes. it was stupid. the best thing for you to do here is to talk to her about it. tell her it is really nice of her to want to teach and help out the kids but she needs to try not to do it so much. if you feel the need to, talk to the teacher about it and say that your child ends up doing all of the work and you don't think it is right for the other person to get as much credit for it. that is really all that you can do in this situation. hope this helps. good luck.

You should discuss this with the principal and her couseler. The teacher should assign your daughter to single projects.

Or if the teacher needs so much assistance, you daughter should be exempt from projects and should help as a teachers aide.

I would see about seperating duties of the project between the two kids so each HAS to do some and then the teacher will know who did not. discuss with teacher, principal, and/or counselor.

She needs to communicate with the teacher and ask suggestions for how to better keep the other students interest. Also, let her feelings be known about doing all the work and both students getting equal credit. You see, she herself is being taught through teaching others how to communicate and how to get others to communicate with her.

I know the fustration! I had the same problem. I understand the teachers point of peer on peer "help". It's great your child is willing
to help and even better she knows the responsibility of doing her assisgnment. One of these days your daughter won't do it anymore, why should she, no one else does. This is hurting YOUR child not anyone elses. I think you should demand and not ask anymore before your daughter ends up like the moochers.

The teacher is doing the best she can with what she has to work with. Just be thankful that your daughter isn't one of the kids that has to "sponge" off of the smarter one.

my son is in the same boat... an idea may be for you to help your daughter to separate out the project into what she did and what the other student does to make sure she gets the kudos she deserves. you also may want to talk to the principal of the school regarding this situation as it may be happening to other students too.
