Usually it means it is the first church of that denomination in that city, and only Protestant churches do that. So, First Baptist is claiming to be the first Baptist church in that community, ditto First Presbyterian, First United Methodist, etc. My city, oddly enough, has a First Presbyterian, a Second Presbyterian, a Fourth Presbyterian, but no Third Presbyterian. Weird.

You mean, Why do so many churches start with the word "first"...maybe the same reason banks do it...I think churches just took after the banks...Second National Banks are hard to come by as are Second Baptist Churches.

Churches have the same mentality as banks apparently.

I used to attend Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. It is pretty well known and centrally located on the "Magnificent Mile."

They don't. Some churches don't even use numbers. For example, there are three churches in my neighborhood that don't start with first -- Hope Chapel, Faith Lutheran, Resurrection Presbyterian

No, ours is just Calvary Church, but doesn't everyone want to be first? I don't know what the 'first' thing is all about.

Because they feel inadequate because any fairly well-read person knows beyond a shadow of a doubt that the FIRST church was the Catholic Church.
