A literal reading of the two creation myths in Genesis indicates that Adam had two wives. External traditions were incorporated into that odd bit of the narrative in order to explain it and promote the agenda of those doing the incorporating.

So she was a literary artefact that was personified and then demonized.

Identifications with Mesopotamian goddesses is a fun game. But the strongest evidence that there is a correlation is simply that the early Hebrew writers liked to do that (cf the Asherah). After all, they had a monotheistic viewpoint to promote.

Myth works because the characters personify qualities of personality and aspects of history. The stories are ways of talking metaphorically about these intangibles. Nowadays, the story we tell is to celebrate, rather than denigrate, women's strength, and so Lilith is useful once again.

I thought she was a character on Cheers played by Bebe Newirth?

I think she was a demonised goddess myself. It is clear the Isrealites were polytheistic and she had to be done away with with the rise of monotheism.

Definitely demonIZED by misogynistic Jewish bronze-aged men who needed to keep women subservient with this myth. This is why Eve "came from Adam's rib". It's saying to the female gender, "I made you, you are a piece of me, and I can do away with you if I wish!" All these creation myths are horribly misogynistic and cruel to women. Whether it's making the REAL first and EQUAL woman a demoness, or blaming Eve for tasting the apple, ancient man did not like powerful women and wanted control over them. Please disregard all the Christians who answered you here. They do not realize what they believe is all myth. Research this stuff on your own. It's all out there!

The JCI religions took many polytheistic deities and demonized them. Later, the slightly smarter Catholic Church also sainted some of them, like the great goddess Brigid who later became St. Brigit. (I believe the Chruch de-canonized her in the middle of the last century, admitting this had been done on purpose to draw more followers.)

Lilith was deleted from the Genesis tale because she was too emancipated for jewish culture. The first Adam's wife, he banned her because she pretended to be equal to him... then she became a demon.
A little sexist, the holy bible, uh?
