There is a renewed interest in witchcraft, demonism, fortune telling, astrology and every form of occultism today. Sad to say, many people do not know what the Bible teaches on this important subject.
The Bible teaches that those who seek to communicate with spirits or with the dead, become defiled and are unfit to appear before God to worship Him. "Regard not them that have familiar spirits (mediums), neither seek after wizards, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God." Leviticus 19:31.
God cuts off from among His people all who turn to mediums for help. "And the soul that turneth after such as have familiar spirits, and after wizards, to go to whoring after them, I will even set my face against that soul, and will cut him off from among his people." Leviticus 20:6.
Is your mother a witch or into witchcraft? If she is saying this and is not, she does not understand more than likely. Maybe she is entertaining demons thinking they are a lost loved one, or some disembodied spirit trying to contact her, or even to guide her. Is this what she means by familiar spirit? ASK HER honey. She is dabbling into something that is spoken against in the Bible, so please let her know if she does not already dear heart. If she is not a witch or into wicca, she needs to pray. You can call the priest or preacher for her if she is not wanting to entertain them. If she is, that is her business. However you might want to tell her what she is really dealing with according to the Bible. If she does not listen, love her anyway. She is your mother, but you DO NOT have to delve into it yourself. Read your Bible and pray, then decide for yourself what to do.
According to the Bible:
Familiar spirits are demons who basically come to people through other people such as witches or can even come directly to the person. Witches believe they are speaking to good spirits that help people. However they are simply entertaining demons.

familiar just means "pet" and that's all it has ever meant--it got a negative connotation during the dark ages because all animals were supposed to just serve a function--the dogs were for hunting, the cats to catch mice, etc. so when one started to act like a pet it was said to be becoming familiar with you

you should tell her not to push it away having a familiar is a good thing. and tell her that if she has a familiar that means she is a witch.
Familiars: are spirits that guide witches while they are learning the craft.
maybe your mom should get some books on the craft.

Thou shalt not suffer a witch to live.
I'm afraid you're going to have to burn her at the stake. Before you burn her to death make absolutely sure she didn't say something like 'Oh that looks familiar'.
