That depends on factors such as the responsibility of the child, the safety of the neighborhood, availability of communications, history of being able to leave the child unattended without incident, friends / family in the neighborhood in case of an emergency, availability of a babysitter or older sibling...

Use basic reasoning here!

Q: "At what age can a child be left home alone in Maryland?"

A: Family Law Article, § 5-801, provides:
(a) A person who is charged with the care of a child under the age of 8 years may not allow the child to be locked or confined in a dwelling, building, enclosure, or motor vehicle while the person charged is absent and the dwelling, building, enclosure, or motor vehicle is out of the sight of the person charged unless the person charged provides a reliable person at least 13 years old to remain with the child to protect the child.
(b) A person who violates this section is guilty of a misdemeanor and on conviction is subject to a fine not exceeding $500 or imprisonment not exceeding 30 days, or both.

This is all I found on the matter...

I live in Texas but I let me 11 year old son stay at home babysitting his 5 siblings for an hour or so while I go and run errands! (siblings are two 9 year olds, an 8 year old, and two 4 year olds)

I make sure that he knows the rules. Not to answer the phone or the door (everyone who matters has a key to my house); if he has any problems he knows my cell phone #; and if there's an emergency his Uncle Lance lives 2 doors down and if they're not at home he knows he can go to any of the neighbors houses! We are all very close to eachother on this block! I know that my kids are going to be ok no longer than I leave them! And at 11 years old my son is very mature and responsible!

I guess it all depends on how mature and responsible you think your 12 year old really is on how long you think you can let them be at home by themselves!

I would not leave a 12 year old home alone cause so many things could go wrong plus they are way too young.
