Dandruff, resulting from an overdried scalp, comes off in white flakes.
Lice, a parasite, latches unto the scalp -- usually resulting from not washing your hair, using someone elses hairbrush, or even overcleaning your hair.
So, basically, lice are bugs and dandruff are flakes. You should be able to tell the difference between them by looking at them.
They both do make your head itchy though, so I see the confusion that you are coming from.
As for the treatment:
Dandruff -- head and shoulders. seriously. It is the best out there and is the cheapest.
Lice -- You'll need to see a doctor, probably first to make sure that's what you have, and then get a prescription for a special shampoo. It is also highly contagious, so you'll want to try and not spread it around.
Good luck! Hopefully you just have dandruff . . .

I'm not sure about lice. It is very hard to get rid of those. There are specific things out there you need to get in order to get rid of lice.
I used to have dandruff a lot. I find that if I skip a day of showering, I have dandruff again. I used to take showers every other day, but now it's every day specifically because of this. That has stopped the problem on the most part. Basically, taking showers and washing your hair every day is how you get rid of dandruff. Sometimes a dandruff shampoo helps. It may take a few days to get rid of the dandruff, but once you do, if you keep up with the good habbit of washing your hair every day you won't have dandruff very often. Make sure you use both shampoo and conditioner, too.

If you have flaky white specs in your hair and when you scratch your head sometimes there is more white flakies and your head is itchy than you probably have dandruff I recomend head and shoulders dandruff shampoo. It works! If you have little white specs that seem to be moving then you probably have lice. But if you do don't worry there are special shampoos you can purchase to get rid of it.

Dandruff is white and will flake off your scalp if scratched. It's caused by excess oil building up on your scalp. If your scalp is dry, you can also have flakes, but it's just dry skin. If you can remove some of the flakes by scratching your scalp, or you see flakes on your clothes, you probably have one of these issues. Lice ( the actual bugs) are dark, and move fast! You probably won't be able to see the bugs on your scalp by yourself. The eggs, however, are clear to white. They are usually concentrated at your nape and behind your ears, and will be close to your scalp. If you think it is an egg, try to scrape the egg off between your nails. If you can't pull it off, it is an egg. In this case, you'll need to get a lice removal kit. If you're still in doubt, go ask your hairstylist.

I read that dandruff has a direct link to the state of your colon and you may not be expelling everything you need to in the bathroom causing dandruff. Try some flax oil daily, or even take a spoon of olive oil daily to moistr. you from the inside out.

Well dandruff, gets on your shoulders and head lice stays in the hair, they like to stay where its "Warm" and if they get on your shoulders than someone's got a bad case of head lice!! That needs attending ASAP!!! And unfortunately, you have to wash everything, and spray everything with the headlice treatment sprays, and spray your couches, and carpet's, everything that's any type of material in your whole entire house!!! And do the treatments on the hair every 4-6 weeks, until all of the eggs are gone!! Now, dandruff, isn't as itchy as head lice is!!! Dandruff is flaky, whereas headlice has legs, and if you took one of those white, (whatever they are) underneath a bright light, you could really get a good look at it, and determine whether its one or the other!! Now, if its a child your worried about , you definately need not do her hair too often!!! It is very dangerous, if the hair gets done too often! My sister used to work for Laughlin's Elementary School, and she told me of a child's Grandmother, who did her child's hair so often, when the child died, the coroner said it was from the headlice poison!!! How sad is that?! The Grandmother was doing her hair apparently every week , instead of following the directions....And I'll tell you from my youngest getting it from a friend years ago, you have to take the child and put them under a bright light and take each and every egg out of each chunk of hair, I stayed up late one night for about three hours, because my daughter had gotten them from one of the other kids at her babysitter's house, and at that time the babysitter told me she couldn't come tomorrow if every single egg wasn't gone, and I couldn't afford to miss work. So I stayed up and took, rubber bands, and went through one inch at a time of her hair, and put those eggs in water, and flushed them down the toilet!!! It was a long dragged out process, because my daughter had hair down to her but!!! But, it had to be done, in order for me to be able to go to work , the next morning!! And what made me mad, was I got completely rid of my daughter's head lice, but the other mom didn't do her two girls hair the way I did, so within about 3-4 weeks, my daugher had them back again, so I had a "Fit" with the babysitter about the other mom not doing her girls hair, the way I did, and how hard I worked to get rid of it, plus hearing how dangerous the medicine was from my sister, really made me furious!!! So , she told the other mom, to do the same or they couldn't come back and I had to go through the whole process all over again!!! Pissed me off!!! So, just take a microscope or some good reading glasses, and a very bright light and check those white specks out really good!! Head lice will have legs, and you can visably see them legs moving, and the actual head lice isn't what you have to worry about, its the eggs that will hatch within a week or so you have to get rid of more importantly!!! Because the headlice will die from the medicine imediately!! The eggs wont!!! Good luck to you!!!

dandruf can "float" through your hair.. starting at the scalp and moving downward.. lice stays close to the scalp.
Get some head and shoulders, or other dandruff shampoo and scrup your scalp well to get those pesky flakes out of there!
