Edgar Allen Poe: The Pit And The Pendulum
In death — no! even in the grave all is not lost. Else there is no immortality for man. Arousing from the most profound of slumbers, we break the gossamer web of some dream.."
Who says 'you can't take it with you'?
Some do, I guess most, well most of us will have passed without recognition say but family and friends. Perhaps some great achievements? Could be leaving behind a pile of cash, gold or
a cure for cancer, could be that many would recall you for a kindness or a gentle loving presence?
But what if the now "lost soul", in the grave was evil? and is not repentant?
They say you never get another chance to make a "first impression" seems you also do not get another chance to leave a final, last impression? (JMK, 2005)
Is this a statement of "hope" for such as salvation? Or just as an accountant looking over the books, even like St Peter at the Gates, deciding what does it all amount to.
Whatever you answer for school is a direct reflection of your beliefs and values, creed if you "personalize" you answer.
All the answers provided are good, most reflect back something of the person who answered.
So, I am saying that the "good people", those even 'simple" and who try be be righteous and such are in the "same boat" as an evil one, a dictator, serial killer and such. If you had as some say "Bad Karma" well it will still be floating around on Earth.
So a Christian and one who follows "The Enlightened One" as in the East may, will reflect on this question different views.
Such evil as well the usual sob's: hitler, stalin, mao, and such
"live on" for them as well as the rest of us who wander for a lifetime, leave a legacy.
Maybe Poe is just asking "what next" yet the quote is presented
with a question mark by you but not by Mister Poe.
Suspect if the teacher, professor placed all the students answers in a printed paper, that fellow students could pick out may by just their answers.
You can answer this as who you are: your faith, belief's, hopes
or you can answer this as say one "looking down" on mankind, or just as I did, asking and answering but not following any path.
I see it as a "simple" quote, a simple 'truth' as the others have presented. No, "all is not lost" when one dies, but that does not state that they were not just a 'good person' who left behind loved ones....
So, you answer as what it means to you, but certainly you can point out some of the issues presented.

One person can and does affect many people in their life time.
No one goes through this life alone. Even when you are not aware of what influence you might have upon another, be assured that you do have some sort of influence.
When someone passes through this life he/she leaves many things, memories, ideas, etc. Your physical life may come to an end but you live on through the people who knew and loved you.
Therefore, as long as there is a memory there is life even beyond the grave.

How you touch the lives of the ones you meet on this road of life lives in there heart and may change their life.
Think about it this way.
If you smile at a person you pass and they were having a bad day, it may turn it around for that person and in turn they help someone.
If you raise your children the right way or the wrong way, that is how they will think. NOT all children will ware their way of living on their sleave like a badge of terror...some can change. So if you were the one that helped change that person after you die what you taught that person will still live on.

Pretty much it is saying that a person lives on and keeps contributing to society and other peoples' lives after they have died. Your ideas, effect on others, and your impact on the world stays behind. Nothing you have done during your lifetime was in vain, it has made a difference.

Well the next line is something like this..... Or else there would be no immortality for men. Probably means that Death is not the end because there is life after death. But i'm just guessing here.

there are two ways to answer, 1st if you are religious- if you believe in God the grave does not end your eternal life. 2nd if you are not religious, your body returns to the earth and thus completes the cycle and provides nourishment for the next living thing

All humans are connected. Even though you pass you live on in the lives of the people you have touched. Once you set an idea in motion it will continue until it reaches its end, not yours.

Just because someone else died doesn't mean you died.
