I'm sorry how do you think that people in the military are rich?? based on the below average pay scale to their civilian counterparts?

LOL. I think I understand what you are saying more than they do. You are saying that we that join the military are poor and the people in power that use the military are rich, right?! A lot of people don't go into the military to be worried about the pay. It's the principle. Like the Peace Corps. I've known a couple of rich people join too. So have some of our former President's like Kennedy. He was in the same branch as I was in. So I think that you are wrong.

I hope that this is just a question and not your view. This is the #1 comment that offends people in the military! Without a military, we would have no USA. Someone would have taken your freedom of speech away a long time ago. Most people join the military out of a sense of duty to this country. Not everyone in the military comes from poor families! Many are highly educated, responsible citizens from decent families. And those that are not highly educated are by the time they get out! To compare the military to the welfare system in America is like comparing North Korea to the US! How can the liberal media say they support the troops then spout off garbage like this? This is why military men and women are moving away from the democrat party.

That would depend greatly on the objectives of a military campaign, and the goals of the Government.
If you're in a country where the goals of the country are to solve problems of others, defend the nation and participate in missions for the greater good, then no, the military is not a social welfare program.

how do you figure? First of all the majority of service members with families, are just at or slightly below poverty line. However, we aren't typically allowed foodstamps or a lot of govt. programs that the civilians are. If you have children, one parent almost always MUST quit working because we cannot afford childcare. For a family of 2, childcare is approx. 1000 mo. (atleast everywhere I have been). Military wives with a degree can't hardly find work, because we are going to leave again, and employers don't want that, they want permanent employees. Wives without degrees can find only meanial work, that may pay slightly over min. wage. Brining in less than 1200 a month, with a 1000 mo. childcare bill, 200 mon for gas etc.. We end up paying just to work.
Yet we still do it. We work our asses off, few of us get assistance of anykind. Then we have to deal with ignorant people who think they have all the answers as to where the military life is concerned. So what happens, we suffer financially, mentally and physically, just to make ends meet. But we dont' complain to you or anybody else. Because this is our lot in life, and we are proud to have it. People on welfare should automatically be forced to join the military.

Considered that there are people that are dying I wouldn't call this a social welfare program. All soldiers work, not all welfare recieptents work. You have to leave your family, friends, and everything you know to go fight a war, how many people on welfare do that? Trust me you do not get rich in the military, yes you make money, especially if you are unmarried and deployed, but does that mean your rich, far from it. If you are married and don't have kids, you have to pay for housing and two seperate people as one is deployed and one isn't.

You're far more likely to find men and women from the upper middle class in the military than from the lower class. That's just a fact.

I can only think of one aspect where the military can be considered a social welfare program:
When you subsidize something you get more of it.
The military subsides excellence.

LOL......I worked my butt off in the Air Force, I worked rotating shifts, I worked long hours, and I gave them my all and they paid me 1/3 of what I got on the outside doing the same job. The military today is made up of mostly middle to upper middle class and its tougher to get in the military today than it used to be. You need to bone up on your topic before you make such uninformed comments. Welfare recipients should work so hard. hell civilians should work so hard.
