I'm looking for some fairly inexpensive renters insurance. I don't want State Farm and Progressive doesn't offer it here. I live in New York state. Thanks :)

Merchants Mutual is a GREAT little company that writes in upstate New York. They're headquartered in Buffalo. Travelers is also a great company. They both write through independent agents, so you can contact them and ask for a local agent.

You can also just go to your phone book, and look for a local agent, and see if they can get you 3-4 quotes with different companies.

Progressive doesn't write renters insurance - or homeowners insurance - anywhere. Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide - those are all captive writers - they only write through their own agents, who aren't allowed to sell insurance from any other company.

Call a local "Insurance Agency," Look one up in the phone book or vial the internet and they generally have 4 or more comanies they write policies for. It should cost you about 150 or so depending on where you live. You are better off doing it that way instead of going to a direct writer who will only have one type of policy to offer.

We use AAA it gives us everything and is real good about fixing up things when there is any damage.
