My dogs are loaded with static electricity, Both sheperd mixes, Kelly, the Aulstralian Sheperd mix, is the worst. You can't pet her at all with out sparks...I must admit, that at night when it's really dark out, it is incredible to watch, she sparks alover the place. However I'd like to stop it. Other than a bath... any sugestions?

I hope you're not going to consider using a dryer sheet! Did you know that some clothes even come with warnings not to use that stuff?

What you can do is add a little conditioner to a spray bottle and mist them when you brush them. The other thing that will help is adding about 1 tablespoon of veg. oil to their food daily, or better yet, a salmon oil capsule. It's good for their skin as well as coats, especially in this dry winter weather.

Try frequent brushing with a sleeker brush. This will distribute the dogs natural body oils throughout the coat. Also using some Eucalyptus oil in a spray bottle consisting of one cup of water for every 10 drops of oil will help get rid of the static electricity. It will also keep fleas away and help them smell good. Do not use fabric softener sheets though. There are very few on the market that claim to be safe but are not proven.

Low humidity. Electrostatic electricity created by rubbing some substances against each other (such a rubbing a balloon on your shirt and then palcing it on a ceiling or wall where it 'sticks'; or nylon products 'crackling' when taken out of a clothes dryer "static cling") can disperse in air with a normal to high number of water molecules in the air. When the air is too dry, the electrons can not dissipate, and so 'jump' to the nearest object - you, or the dog!

It seems like you could use a plant mister and every now and then give them a squirt. Aren't there sprays on the market to take static electricity out of clothes? I don't know if they'd be harmful to animals, that's why I suggest the plant mister with no Miracle-Gro in them!

I have 2 pomeranians and when they get tlike that, I wipe them with a dryer sheet. It works well and they smell good, too! However, a humidifier is the best for static.

When you brush them...use a non-nylon bristle brush. Also...you might try adding a conditioner to their coat when you bathe them. You can also rub them down with a fabric sheet softener. I use those for a lot of static stuff....even my own hair. lol

A humidifier might help. It sucks when they touch you with their wet nose and then you really get a shock!
