I dont know if you can die from this, but it is called sleep apnea and you are probably doing some damage to your heart, as it is having to work harder every time you stop breathing then gasp for air. I'd see your doctor for some options.

It is Sleep Apnea, it is possible that you can live for a long time without any problem, or you can stop breathing altogether, there are severe risks. Speak to your doctor or go to a clinic, where you can schedule a, "Sleep Study." Where basically you will go and sleep in their facility for a night or two with a few monitors on. If you have an event of Apnea(stopping breathing), they will prescribe you a CPAP machine. This machine is, in basic terms, a mask hooked up to an air pump. As long as you are breathing, it does nothing. If you stop and it doesn't detect you pulling the air from it, it will push air into you, forcing you to take a breath. It is a little more detailed then that, but that is the gist.

I know many people with this problem, and they have to use machines at night. It is called sleep apnea and your heart stops when snoring causes you to hold your breath. See a Dr. about your problem!
