I brought a Philips computer less than a year ago from PC world....... and few months later I got a virus.....I took the computer to a normal internet cafe where they fix computers. What the guy did was that he removed my windows XP media edition and installed windows 2003 he also deleted the original settings... and don’t went that because that’s not what I paid for…now I contacted Philips and they are refusing to give me a windows XP media edition recovery disk!! Is their anywhere I can get my computer to the original settings? Or a copy of the WINDOWS XP MEDIA EDITON RECOVERY DISK? Or a TV card?

This answer may not be want what you want to hear, but it is a viable legal option.

Buying a new operating system will help and solve lots of problems, then get driver updates from your pc's manufacture.

If your pc has a restore feature where you will see a c: and a d: drive you should be able to do a serious restore windows on it.
But it seams you have tried that option already.

Go back and INSIST that they reinstall xp media center! If that's what was on the computer before you took it in, it is THEIR responsibility to make it right! If they refuse, tell them you are going to contact your local 'newsguy' and report them. I'm sure you have one of those guys on the news that deals with consumer complaints. Also tell them you'll report them to the Better Business Bureau. Finally, threaten to take them to small claims court. Be insistent. Be SERIOUS. Idiots like that need to be closed down! If you actually had to take them to court, you'd win, provided you have some sort of proof that the PC came with media center.

Don't try to work a fix yourself. You would need to install a whole new operating system and you'd have to buy it. MAKE THEM DO IT!

Cave

p.s. All, she can't do a system restore if the Media Center doesn't exist anymore. My understanding of this question is that they UN-installed MCE and installed a DIFFERENT operating system, Win 2003.

System Restore (Enable, Disable, Clear) WinXP

Reinstall System Restore
http://windowsxp.mvps.org/repairsr.htm

To enable or disable System Restore, perform the following steps:

Start the System Control Panel applet. Select the System Restore tab. Clear the "Turn off System Restore on all drives" check box to enable System Restore, or select this check box to disable System Restore. Click OK. Also here:
To delete older restore points, but leave the system restore turned on: Right Click the Drive in question/Properties/Disk Cleanup/More Options/System Restore/Cleanup.

You can also click the Settings button to set a maximum amount of space that you want each drive to use for restore information. If the drive you select isn't the system drive, you can also disable System Restore on a per-drive basis. The maximum amount of space that you can use for restore information is 12 percent per drive.

An alternative to the usual method of enabling and disabling Windows XP's System Restore feature is to use the registry. To use this alternative, perform the following steps: Start the registry editor (regedit.exe).

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SystemRestore.
If a "DisableSR" value doesn't exist, go to the Edit menu, select New, DWORD value, and create the value.
Set the value to 1 to disable System Restore or 0 to enable System Restore.

Go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\sr to prevent the System Restore service from starting.

Double-click Start, and set the value to 4 to stop the service from starting or to 0 for normal startup. Close the registry editor.

"After making SR disabled in services, I tried to open SR (no reboot) in CP/Services it said SR is off, would you like to turn on. I said yes and everything works fine now!"
