I have heard that they may contain mercury and therefore they are potentially harmful to the environment.

You are right to be concerned. Fluorescent tubes do indeed contain a small amount of mercury. It is actually the mercury that is excited by the electricity and gives off radiation that is mostly out of the visible light range. This radiation hits materials that coat the inside of the tube (called phosphors) which convert the invisible energy into visible light.

Most cities and towns have either hazardous waste collection terminals or designated days during the year when they will take hazardous waste. In some states, like California, disposal at an authorized waste site is required. And finally, some home building supply stores will accept the tubes for recycling. Given them a call.

If that doesn't work, try calling 1-800-CLEANUP or check out www.earth911.org for disposal sites.

Thanks for your concern. All of us and our children will benefit because of your actions.

Many municipalities have waste stations that accept materials that are toxic or dangerous if disposed of along with regular garbage. Why not phone the Public Works department of your town and conult with them.

If you throw them off a really high bridge in the middle of the night, when the humidity is low, they will ''light up'' on the way down!

They need to be brought to your local recycling center for proper disposal.
