I'm not going to get one soon, but when I move into my own place, i will get one.
I want a small dog that is easy to comb, (i prefer smooth coated dogs) doesn't have to be walked on an 2 mile hike, friendly, easy to train, lovable and cute!
I was thinking of a Jack Russell Terrier (JRT) or cross-breed but if you guys have better ideas they might change my mind.

I was also wondering what to call it if it was a boy or a girl.
I thought Patch, Spot, Gabby, and Buddy.

I wouldn't get a JRT, they're way to full of energy... some people like that... and others don't (most people don't.. they get tired of it). I would get a bision frise, Maltese, shitzu (dint' know how to spell ), or a miniature poodle. GOOD LUCK! i hope you do get a dog in the future... they're good companions! HAve fun in the future with your dog! OH.... can you do me a favor? I've been trying to get my best answer rate up... and its hard! So.. could you please rate me best answer! If you do, THANKS A WHOLE LOT!!!!
EDIT! the names that you just listed are totally cute! I would pick one of those!

Read about the breed! Jack Russell Terriers are notoriously high energy dogs who LOVE to bark. What you see on the show Frazier is a very well trained dog and that takes time and constant effort. If you plan on working all day and leaving the dog at home alone, then you are not really ready for a dog. Dogs need to be let out every 4 hours and need constant attention as puppies.
You might want to consider getting a kitten or cat for companionship.

There are several personality matching books for humans and dogs. One I really liked is "Why We Love the Dogs We Do: How to Find the Dog That Matches Your Personality". It has a simple quize to help you focus your personality and habits to match those to a dog with like traits. It also has a lot of ancedotal stories in regards to celebrities and the pets they would select.
JRT is not the dog for you. They will need a lot of training to be a reasonable dog and that will still be awhile. They have a lot of energy, that left unspent, will become negatively channeled into destructive pastimes.
Pugs are very friendly, don't need much exercise. Chihuahuas are a good suggestion too.

i think you might like a Mustard Dandie Dinmont below is its standard:
Height: 8-11 inches
Weight: 18-24 lbs
Life Span: 14-15 yrs
Breed Group: Terriers
Overview
The properly socialized and trained Dandie Dinmont is a delightful dog. It can be protective of its property, wary of strangers, dominant, and independent, but also gentle if treated kindly and with respect. It is very important to start obedience training and to socialize this dog with adults, children, and other animals at an early age.
Appearance
The Dandie Dinmont's coat, a mixture of coarse and soft hair with a crisp texture, is about two inches long.
Its color is pepper or mustard. The head and the soft, silky topknot on the head may be creamy white. The rich, dark hazel eyes are large, round, and bright.
Grooming & Exercise Needs
Dandie Dinmonts need to be brushed and combed two to three times a week and trimmed every three months. Vigorous exercise will reduce this dog's tendency to dig holes and bark excessively.
Origins
The Dandie Dinmont was developed in England in the 17th century to hunt badgers, foxes, rats, and weasels. In the 19th century it was named Dandie Dinmont after a country gentleman in Sir Walter Scott's 1815 novel Guy Mannering.
Dinmont, who lived on the border between England and Scotland, kept six of these playful, affectionate terriers on his farm.
This breed has been popular with gypsies as well as aristocracy at various times in its history.
Special Alerts
Breed-related health concerns: hip dysplasia, patellar luxation, intervertebral disc protrusion, ear infections, lymphoma.

Run, run, run from the Jack Russell terriers - they're insane, high-energy, strong-willed little dogs.
A Boston Terrier might be the perfect little dog for you - not much shedding, small, low-energy (great apartment dogs), easily trained, congenial, CUTE!
Their only drawback is their pushed-in snout makes them likely to snore and end up with sinus problems.

Get a pug.
Jack Russel Terriers are very energetic. It will be the worst breed to get if you don't want to be walking it miles every day.

i have a toy maltese.... the toys are better because the don't need extra, extra, extra combing.. they don't shed a hair unless you pull on it. mine was potty trained in 3 days, too!! he does tricks, and is VERY loveable. he needs atention like most dogs, but you'll be glad u got one.. go to PuppyPetite.com, and go on the maltese page. BUT, if u go to new york and get one, don't give it the medecine they perscribe, because it made mine sick!!!! just through it out if he doesn't want it because there's no use!
