We are trying to house train our Jack Russel Terrier puppy, He is 4 months old and he is getting better about not having as many accidents in the house but he needs to let us know that he needs to go out. He goes to the door but he is quiet. Then if we don't notice he is at a door he goes to the bathroom by the door. We want to train him to Bark at the door. SO how do we train him to bark once he is at the door and he needs to go out?

First you need to train him to bark on command. You can do this by finding his favorite toy and playing with him. have him chase the toy but do not let him have it. He will get excited and eventually bark. While you are playing with him repeat a command such as "speak" or "bark." Once he barks immediately give him the toy and praise him in an energetic voice and pet him. This lets him know he did a good job. After awhile he will learn the bark command. Now to apply it housebreaking. Everytime you go to take him out make him sit and speak. It will be like going back to day one because you will have to do it frequently. He will learn that sitting and barking equal going outside.

I have a Jack Russel Terrier (10 months) and I trained him to ring a bell when he wants to go out. You should take him out every 3 - 4 hours and ring the bell loudly and yell "do you want go outside" everytime. After time he will associate the bell with going potty. I was able to train my dog to ring the bell in about three days and now he does it EVERY time!

Jack Russel Terriers are VERY smart and can easily be trained.

Before letting him out bounce up & down excitedly asking if he wants out till he barks from excitment - then tell him hes a good dog & let him out. He should make the connection that barking makes the door open.
Second idea: hang a sleigh bell off the door handle - ring it EVERY time you open the door & encourage the dog to ring it - eventually the bell ring/door open connection will be made

You can put a bell on the handle of the door and train him to "ring" it. If you want him to bark, teach him to speak. Find a treat that he likes. When he barks, tell him "speak" and try to get him to bark again. That is how I trained my weiner dog. He also knows hand signals. Remember, lots of treats and praise!!

Do not teach him to bark. You will regret it down the road. As mentioned above, hang some sort of bell at the door.

Train him to paw it or nose it. Every time you take him out, jingle the bell.

Don't teach him to bark. Start a regular routine of taking him out. Start First thing in the morning, Then on your lunch break (if possible), then after dinner, and finally before bed. This should work and keep the puddles of the rug.

Why don't you try and teach another way.

When he is with you (in your eyesight) all the sudden ask him if he wants to go outside and then let him out. By doing this you are conditioning him to come to you and ask. You have to be consistant!
