It depends on where you shop.
A debit card is safer than a credit card, because the banks have to protect you, by law.
Whenever you use your debit card online, watch your checking account over the next few week. If you see a charge for under $1, cancel your card immediately.
When I worked for Wells Fargo, a customer called in to find out why a $20 purchase would no go through on his debit card when it was payday. After looking through his account, I saw that he made a purchase from American Mint for $40. Over the next few weeks, various Mint companies put through charges, starting from under $1 to over $4,000 until his account was drained.
We were able to get all of his money back, but the investigation took up to 90 days.

Depends where you shop. There is always a risk associated with any transaction. I have had no problems so far. The more well knowned the place the safer you are. Also, its to their interest to keep you safe. They want a return customer. I had bought many a books from amazon.com and various other places. If you still don't feel secure then you can set up a special account in your bank. Talk to your bank and tell them you want this special account to be associated with your debit card for online purchases only. Then only put the money you will need there. If someone gets a hold of that account then you will loose minimal money.

I used to work for IBM. Yes, it's safe to use a debit card as far as the software is concerned. Banks are the most demanding about software security. It would be a huge scandal if something went wrong and you'd see it all over the news. The risk comes with the human factor. You need to trust who you are doing business with. This is the value of using PayPal which is a service that acts as intermediary between you and others you are dealing with. They make sure none of your confidential information is given to the seller. I use a debit card with a Visa logo and have the protection from Visa that I have on my credit cards too. The difference is whether the money is taken from me immediately or billed to me. If you have any doubts about the seller or agency doing the financial transaction, use your major credit card then pay the credit card company online. I'm a big supporter of online bill pay. Your creditors don't even get what is on a normal check from you.

I'm assuming you already have the plastic, right?
Go to eBay and sign up for a PayPal account using your checking account and credit (debit) card to secure it.
I've been buying on eBay for years and this is very acceptable to me.
Anything you could possibly want/need will be found on eBay or on any of the other auction sites.
You don't always have to bid on the items; sometimes they can be purchased right away (BUY IT NOW).
I use my debit card so I can keep track of how much I spend, no problems either.
I'm a disabled senior who doesn't drive any more so that online shopping is great for me to have stuff delivered right to my front door.
Just don't get "hooked."

It's safe, as long as the web page is secure. If the address field in your browser shows "https", then it's secure. (It has to have the s.)
