in the two world wars? Not that they weren't crucial to victory, but if they'd stepped up sooner, the wars would have been over a lot sooner.

The evil of Nazism was evident to the whole world. Why not America?

You're all correct. Americans are the most modest people in the world.

The worlds savior I would not say that. A beacon for freedom and democracy maybe.

In WW1 the US enter the war simply with the grounds of demanding to be treated as a world power. The US and Woodrow Wilson did allot to end the war, put up with the petty squabbling of Clemenceau, & Lloyd George and their respective governments. The arimistice was achived with the Germans believeing that the initative introduced by Woodrow Wilson would be the basis of the peace treaty. The war ended the Treaty of Versailles pushed through, Clemenceau & Lloyd George pushed Wilson's points out and stated that the US did not bleed enough in the war.
After resucing the allied powers in WW1 and being treated like a red headed step child the US did not want anything else to do with Europe. Let solve there own problems. It was not until the Germans conquered most of Europe that the US started to be concerned about checking the axis powers. What would have happened had we not got involved?

Until 1950, the US had a tradition of having a small standing army and was chronically unprepared for major conflicts. We also had a policy of staying out of European affairs, so even for the two world wars it took some time both to get together and train an army and to garner enough political support to join the fight. We never intended to be a superpower until Dulles in the Eisenhower administration developed his ideas on the Cold War, mistaken though they were. Many in America would still like to mind our own knitting and stay out of international affairs, but there's a degree of naivite in that thinking, as there is in your concept of earlier US entry. It's really hard to go to war with a country like Nazi Germany when your armed forces are not as strong as those of Romania.

I have NEVER heard any usa person or government ( and im not fond of the usa government) make the outrageous claims you say they have made.
I supposed it took them awhile because they probably really didnt want to war, but, I would supposed after a time, people would decide they had better get involved, or to many more people will die.
Dont like it , then ignore history and live for today ! Life is to short to relive the past !

The US has never claimed to be the worlds savior. It is the leader of the free people, if that is what you meant. Before WW2 the US had a isolationist policy. Other words we didn't want any part of going to war. After we were attacked , it left no choice to be involved. Sounds like alot like now doesn't it ?

The US never claimed to be the world's savior, but it seems we are always expected to be(vis`a' vis your reaction to our waiting to get into the world wars.) Make up your mind; are you for, or against us involving ourselves in world affairs? personally, I see the wisdom in just pulling out and letting you all reap what you sow. Maybe it will teach you some appreciation for us "Ugly Americans".

Over here, in the US, we're still trying to figure out how many civilians were slaughtered in Bosnia before we got involved and how many more will be slaughtered in Darfur before we get there.

It seems there are plenty of European soldiers standing around with nothing to do at the moment, why aren't they putting an end to the ethnic cleansing in Sudan?

The US never claimed to be the world's savior!
But...during the first two World Wars, the world was a VERY large place....news travelled slow!
Plus...it wasn't OUR war....not until we were attacked.
Then...well....we all know the rest.

You don't know much about US history. Did it ever occur to you to wonder why the US had to get involved in two continental wars in the first place? We should have let you bleed yourselves so you wouldn't trouble the world any longer.

It was not our war. Pearl Harbor changed that. If WW2 was fought today, we would have protesters calling to bring the troops home!
