My daughter goes to a special education preschool. She got sick about a week and a half ago with pneumonia. I had to keep her home because we didn't want the other kids to get it. Now she refuses to go back even though she's feeling a hundred percent better. She used to love school, so I don't know what her problem is. How do I convince her to go back?

My 4 year old is the exact same way. It's simply a disruption of schedule and when that happens children are FULL of anxiety. Try making treats that she can pass out to the other kids in celebration of her return to class. Help her feel that not only is school important to her, but that she is important to the class. With Valentine's Day comming up, see if encouraging her to pass out the prettiest cards, and she wouldn't want the other children to miss out on her fancy cards and cookies!

During the sickness she probably got to do what everyone would love to do all day. Lay around and watch television. If she wants to stay home don't let her do anything fun. No tv, no coloring, no toys, etc.

She will be so bored that school will seem like Disney World.

No one ever said being a parent was easy.

Tell her that now that she is feeling better it's time to go to school.

Tell her that going to school is necessary for her so she an grow up and do the things grown ups do.

Then take her to school & if she cries wipe her tears, tell her you love her & will be back to pick her up.

She got use to having mommy around and being waited on.
Just remind her of her friends at school and how much they miss her. Remind her of all the fun she had at school playing with the toys, listening to stories and playing with her friends.
Do all this while driving her to school. You are the grown-up.
Tell her it is time to go back to school. Get her a new 'going back to school' outfit she can show off at school.

Get one of her little friends from school to come over to play. While the friend's there get him/her talking about what they are doing at school and how much fun it is.

Or get one of the teachers to call her and chat about how they miss her.

Or go with her and stay for the morning/afternoon and go out for a treat afterward.

You simply take her back. Heck I can understand her not wanting to go back. I don't want to go back to work after being off for a week...but I don't have the luxury of staying home...You just have to take her back...yes she is going to have to readjust and it won't be easy...That's life...

Pull up to the front of the school at 8am and drop her off and tell her you'll be back to pick her up at the usual time. Don't argue with her, just take her and be done with it.
Jeez, if you can't make her go to Pre-school, what are you going to do with her when she is a teenager?
