Prone to obesity if overfed and not exercised properly.

If not bred from proper stock, luxation patella. If you recall the little dogs in wheel chairs, that is because of crappy breeders usually and the doggies have messed up knee caps.

"Hunting Injuries"... they love to track down badgers, moles, frogs, snakes, slugs, cats, other dogs.... so keep them vaccinated and keep them out of trouble so they don't loose an eye to an angry badger.

Read stories on the dachsund rescue pages to get a better idea of what people are breeding and tossing out to suckers that will give them cash. Also misplaced dogs that need a home. Often times, already potty trained and shots done!

Check out the web links below with much more information.

I own a long-haired Dachshund, and he is almost fourteen, and has absolutely no medical conditions. We have taken some precautions that all dachshund owners should take for a healthy dog: if you allow your dog to come up on furniture, pick the dog up using two hands; one under the chest and one supporting the back legs. This prevents the back from being stretched too far, and creating health issues.

Good luck!

I have one, and they are said to be prone to back conditions, but my vet has two and doesn't worry about it, and my wiener dog's breeder also does not worry about it. It really depends on who you talk to, but they're great dogs, and they're a lot fun. For more information, I suggest going to www.dogbreedinfo.com because they have a list of all diseases associated with Dachshunds. Hope this helps, and you have GREAT taste in dogs.

They don't like being covered in sauerkraut and mustard. This I know for a fact.
