It's a wonderful stinging burning feeling. I does hurt, but not to where you would want the artist to stop. Good luck.

like a cat kneading you with it's claws in the same place for the whole time. It burns and feels like scrathes while they do it, then it throbs all day and night. They don't hurt that much though unless it is a sensitive spot or they have to shade a lot. I's a little like a burn for a few days. It only takes about a week before all the pain is gone, and you can stop using the ointment. Some people are allergic to latex and plastic. ALL tattoos have plastic and some have latex, but not many. Red has the most plastic, and does the most damage, and takes the longest to heal, and scabs often for weeks. Most people don't have this problem though. Only a few people have issues with red beyond that. The hip and shoulder are the least painful places to get a tattoo.

Hey Crazy... I have only had the outsides of my biceps tattooed but the closest thing I can compare it to .....it's like having tiny little sparks falling down on you over and over. They go out as soon as they hit the skin...but there's always more of them falling and hitting.. It doesn't hurt so much as it is annoying. The next day (and for about 4 to 6 days later) its going to feel like a sunburn. The key is to relax, listen to music or talk to a friend to distract you. Use the best artist you can find. go to my 360 page and click on the dragon tattoo in my blog, then click it again. My dragon was 12 hours old in that picture...no scabs..no bleeding.
I am doing 8 to 9 hours under the needles next month so I've been doing my research.....here is the best article I could find on pain as charted by body location

I hope this helps

I have a dragon on my left forearm that I've had for over 30 years now . It hurts but after a few minutes it sort of becomes a bit numb but still painful yet tolerable . Of the 2 places you mentioned I'd go for the hip as it may be a little less sensitive and also wouldn't show if you wore a formal dress such as one with thin or no straps as you may in a wedding or special occasion. Good luck !

The sound is worse than the actual needle. And the longer they work the less it hurts as your body kicks in its own painkillers.
The new tattoo can be a little sore but not much, just keep it moist the first week or two with some ointment (I use A&D) and you will be good.
Lots of luck.

On skin over bones its like a razor but tolerable in short duration. My ankle tattoo felt like a gnawing dull pain that quickly went away when the needle stopped, but over my ankle bone i about lost it. It depends on what your pain perception is. My tattoo on my lower back was tolerable until the needle went over my spine ouch! I left bite marks in the artist's chair. Over all it wasn't that bad and my tattoos look beautiful, except on my ankle bone where the color is oh so slightly lightly. Good luck!!!

It kind of feels like it does when you get stung from a bee. Do you know what that feels like? A good spot to get a tattoo is on your chest. It doesn't hurt nearly as much.

As long as you don't go to a loser like KerryT did, it's not bad at all. Mine hardly bleed while getting them done, my lines have not blurred even on the ones that are 15yrs old, my color has retained very nicely. The more stressed you are while sitting in the chair the more you will bleed cause your blood pressure is up. It feels like a scratching on your skin, not as bad as a bee sting. But really it is different for everyone.

I just got my first tattoo one week ago, on my lower back. To me it kind of felt like a burning stinging sensation. To me, the outline hurt worse, *&* it's really not as bad as some people make it out to be... tottally tolerable.
