Use keys on a piano and match your voice to the notes. Check how high and how low you can go. Once you have practiced this have a voice coach listen to you. They will know if you are hitting the note or just straining, and what range you are in. GOOD LUCK!

It is not always that easy to determine.... a friend of mine was being trained as a baritone and getting nowhere with it... but he happened upon a singing teacher who recognized that he was a tenor ... he said it was the quality .... and even though his voice had a dark quality to it (which is what made some people think he was a baritone) he still was a tenor, and a lyric tenor at that ....

It is the underlying quality that categorizes a voice ..and to some extent the range ... usually a voice will display itself, even in its untrained state, by the area that is the most easily produced and readily awake

peace

Trial and error. Try singing in all the different ranges....the one that DOESN'T make you sound like a siamese cat having a seizure is "your range".
