A 5 stone ring is a journey ring if each stone is slightly bigger than the one before it. It ususally represents the kids and how now that you guys are older you love her more than you did at 17. If all the diamonds are the same size, it's usually referred to as an eternity band, just b/c the diamonds stretch the entire band across the finger.
I love the nontraditional approach of not waiting for him, but I disagree that I'd go for a solitare diamond. In our stores, those rarely ever sell. Guys just dont like them. The diamond ones that do are the ones that have smaller stones--mostly gold but have 3 diamond chips spread out. It's stil rather unique for teh woman to do the proposing, so unless your boyfriend is the flashy type, he probably isn't going to want a flashy ring that catches a lot of notice. He'll still tell people you are engaged--just might gloss over the fact that he didn't ask you.
Are you planning on getting wedding bands as well? If not I would propose with a wedding band. Get a comfort fit like mentioned before but I'd get something more simple, plain band. It doesnt have to be all one color (it could have banding where the edges both have a different look), the dark titanium look (my personal favorite and so light weight if he isn't used to wearing rings), or if could have the stratches of brushed silver, whatever makes it unique. Something you both are going to love.
But if you are planning on doing both--getting the engagement ring and the wedding band, I like the idea of doing the opposite color. Say the wedding band will be gold, getting a white gold engagement ring--not like the man will be wearing them next to each other. Then both rings can have a completely different look.
I loved the Celtic designs--they had a ton of them and the symbol of eternal love, the unbroken strand around the ring. I loved that. When my then-boyfriend and I exchanged promise rings I got him that style that had been custom made and everyone asked if it was a wedding band. A lot of people bash the titanium cause you can't cut it off but if your boyfriend doesn't do a manual job (like construction) he isn't likely to break his finger selling insurance. A smaller jeweler who is used to more custom work or a goldsmith--will have tons of catalogs you can look through until you find just what appeals to you.
But custom making jewelry isn't as expensive as it used to be--mine was far less than anything I saw in the stores. And it gives you complete control over the design. Good luck! and start planning this wedding!

a 5 stone ring is for the 5th wedding anniversary.
You can find men's solitaire rings at any jeweler. May I suggest getting a comfort fit ring, as most men are not accustomed to wearing a ring, the comfort fit is a little more expensive, but will be easier to get used to wearing.
Congrats!
