I'd suggest the Nikon D40, which comes with a decent lens for $600.

canon and nikon both have models under $600 {especially on ebay} as to which is best?? depends on what you like... i have a Canon XT and i love it.. its perfect for me,and i really like Canon equipment. whatever you do, dont get less than a 8mp camera.. the larger the files the better quality the resolution.. chekc out www.stevesforums.com for lots of information about the cameras etc...
