There seems to be a certain amount of confusion over the provision of this recipe because the Americans are mistakenly thinking you mean a cheesecake - as in biscuit bottom and cream cheese and sweet topping - but this one dear friends is for an English Cheese FLAN which is something completely different and totally savoury - hence references to onions. Think in terms of a quiche or egg and bacon tart, except this one is with cheese.
(Hope this helps everybody!)

Cheese Flan
Ingrdients:
1 cup sugar
1 vanilla bean, split lengthwise
1 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
1 (12 ounce) can evaporated milk
1 1/2 cups whole milk
5 extra-large eggs
5 ounces cream cheese
1/4 teaspoon almond extract
Preheat the oven to 250 degrees.
Melt the sugar in a saucepan over medium-high heat and cook until it turns into a smooth dark amber caramel.
Pour into the bottom of an 8-inch souffle dish or other round mold.
Using the back of a knife, scrape the seeds from the vanilla bean and add to a blender.
Add the three milks, eggs, cream cheese and almond extract.
Blend until smooth, then pour through a strainer into the caramel-lined mold.
Set the mold into a larger baking pan and pour enough very hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the mold.
Bake until the flan has set, 2 1/2-3 hours-- a toothpick inserted in the center should come out clean.
Let cool, then cover the mold and refrigerate overnight.
When you are ready to serve, run a knife along the inside of the mold to loosen the flan.
Pour about 1/2 inch of hot water in a pan large enough to hold the mold and set the mold in it for 10 minutes, so it will unmold more easily.
Remove it from the water, wipe dry and place a shallow bowl or a small platter over the top.
Invert the flan into the bowl, and serve.

This is the recipe I have although there are several variations.
Cheese Flan
4 eggs
1 Pkg. 8oz. Cream cheese
1 Can Condensed Milk
1 Can Evaporated Milk
¾ cup sugar
¼ cup water
1 8"x10" Metal Pan
1 11"x14" Metal or Glass Pan
Take the 8"x10"pan, add sugar and water (this will cook the caramel). Put the pan on the stove on high until the sugar browns and thickens, (5 to 10 minutes).
Let it cool. In a blender, blend eggs, cream cheese, condensed milk and evaporated milk (3 to 4 minutes).
Pour mix into 8"x10"pan. Put 8"x10" pan inside 11"x14" pan. Put water into 11"x14"pan until almost full. Bake at 325 to 350 for approximately 1 hr and 15 min. When done take the 8"x10"pan out of 11"x14"pan.
Let it cool. Flip it over on a cookie sheet lined with foil.

I asked a school cook as I loved it when I was at school.
Add lots of grated mature cheddar to milk, a little cream (optional), finely diced onion and beaten egg. Mix really well with a fork. Pour into a shortcrust pastry case. Make it look pretty with sliced tomatoes on top. Bake 20mins till set.
Serve with the tangy red sauce we used to get at school.
Mix: ketchup, brown sauce, tabasco, garlic granules, a little honey and salt & pepper. Add water if too thick. Heat to piping hot in microwave.

I think it was probably quiche - fry some onions, put them in a pastry case and top with beaten eggs mixed with some cream, then sprinkle cheese on top. A touch of nutmeg makes a difference too.
