I am planning on purchasing either a sun conure or gold capped conure, and I have read that the fumes from Teflon can be toxic for these birds. I have Calphalon and Cuisinart pots and pans. They are dark in color (rather than stainless steel colored). How can I tell if they are Teflon?

Almost any pan that has a non stick surface has teflon in it. As long as your birds are in a different room and you don't burn the pans, your birds will be fine. The problem arises when you burn the pans, they then emit toxic fumes. I always keep the door of the birds room closed when I'm cooking, and a window open in the kitchen and I use teflon and have never had a problem in 4 years.

The majoraty of non stick pans are coated in teflon. however, when you use them, make sure your bird is not in the room and that you either open a large window or put the fan on above the hob. I usually use both. And Remember, Eggs can be efected in the same way so don't let any eggs that are incubating or due to be incubated in the same area when cooking with teflon pans.

It might be on the bottom of the pot. Both of those brands do make Teflon pots. Look them up on the internet.
