In some cases even without being on antibiotics the dentist will have to work on a tooth immediately. If the infection is severe enough to cause you extreme pain that only the draining of an abscess or opening the canal of a tooth so it can drain from the opening, then yes even without an antibiotic. It's not comfortable because the anesthetic doesn't work because of such an infection, but the results are much less pain due to decreasing the size of the abscess that's building and allowing it an area to drain out of to keep it from filling up again. Some dentist don't like to do this, but like I said it's done only in extreme cases. It's always better to stay on antibiotics for at least two days before any work is done. So if your taking antibiotics and are about to have work done, the dentist is wanting the antibiotics to clean up the infection some so the anesthetic will work allowing you to become numb. He's looking out for your comfort, you should be just fine. Hope I've been of some help with answering this question. Good luck.

sure. it depends on the severity of the infection too and if he feels the infection is under control enough to work on it. the fact you're on an antibiotic isn't the issue really, its the tooth. i was in dentistry for over 20 yrs. and we worked on plenty of teeth where there was infection and the patient was on antibiotics, in fact during root canals where there is an abscess one of the things we did was 'open it up', the canal to relieve the pressure of the infection and the patient was most certainly on antibiotics. the most important thing you need to do is talk to your dentist and have him explain everything he needs to do...just remember its your teeth. you may not understand every little thing he is telling you but have him explain it. by doing that you will be less afraid too.

A horrible dentist my daughter went to did this and because she had the infection, the novicaine had no effect. Perhaps since you've already started the antibiotics, this will not be the case, but I wouldn't take the chance. Just ask the receptionist when you make the appointment.

Your dentist should probably know if you are on an antibiotic for something related to your teeth.

You should call him/her with the information of where the infection is, what medication you're taking, and if it's really important that you have to get into the dentist now or if you should wait until you're done with the infection.
