In the Midwest especially, girls tend to get married a lot younger. Many people get married immediately out of high school or at some point during college. My 18-yr-old cousin is getting married in a couple of months to a guy who is my age (21). That is somewhat normal here. My best friend from high school is married with a 2-yr-old baby girl and thinking about having another one.
While there are some people here who wait awhile to get married, it's not unusual for people to get married at 18 or 19, especially girls. And actually, where I grew up, if someone is around 25 or so and NOT married, it's looked upon as being unusual. But that was a very traditional small town.

I'm 21 and I will be getting married next year (when I am 22) in WI. I think nowadays, people are getting married at younger and younger ages. I think the average ages are between 20-24 years old. For me though, I don't feel like I am getting married too young because I am done with college and have most things set financially and I want to move on with my life. I think a lot of the 18 year olds who are getting married are too young and don't really have a clue what they are about to get into. I don't think its really a location thing either, its just unexperienced people who are moving in too fast.

I grew up in Pittsburgh, PA where it was very normal to be married at 23-24. I moved to the metro NYC area and all of my friends who are getting married are 29-35. I am 26 and getting married this year and they all think that I am so young. And here I was thinking that I was old to get married!

I think its an education level thing. I live in upstate NY and most of my friends when to grad school - the youngest to get married was around your age 27-28, a large group got married at 30-32, one got married at 34 and there are several still single - all over 30, the oldest is 41 but she is engaged at this point.

Catherine.. it all truly depends on the region. I used to live in south florida and the late 20's and early 30's was a common age group for marriage ( all party time out, wild things done, etc) I just recently moved to the midwest and I am finding that in the late teens and early 20 is the average. I don't know the real reason, however, I can assume that the things to do in the region, family mentality is one of the major things. So I do truly understand your question and don't be surprise where the age group is lower and where is higher.

I live in a small rural town in southern
Az. The average age to get married here is around 18.
We do have allot of teenage pregnancies some as young as 13, and for the most part they all get married, with their parents consent.
I remember a "shot gun" wedding took place here around 9 years ago.
I am late 20's and havent been brave enough, yet, to get married.
It sounds like you are on the right track. Congratz and good luck.

Usually the more metropolitan the area the older people get married and the more rural the younger.
In the country if you intend on staying there, chances are that your choices are going to be slim, and the activities are also limited, so it isn't odd to get married at 18 and start having kids.
In the city you have lots of choices for mates and lots of things to do other than raise kids in your 20s.

17-18 years for a woman
20-22 years for a man

May I add that age should never be a dictator of when you should marry, but rather it's a personal decision to marry at all. I still think that there is too much importance placed on 'getting married'.

Mmm, both of my sisters got married when they twenty. It honestly depends on your lifestyle, not really where you live. Some people want to go through college before they get married and have children. I think the most important factor is finding someone you want to spend the rest of your life with, though.
There isn't really a norm anymore because people get married because they want to (or feel obligated to because of pregnancy, although that doesn't always happen, of course).
If you notice, a lot of people are jumping into marriage and then getting divorced, too. But that isn't just people who get married when they're younger.
